I just got back from Oaxaca. They were intense days full of emotions, encounters, learning.
Among the opportunities one of the most important was with the master craftsman Josè Garcia. The fact that he has been blind for 7 years does not prevent him from continuing to work and create large pieces of art, in wood and clay.
While he was offering me his interpretation of the apocalypse from the bible, I started photographing him. And these three images are an excerpt of what I’ll show later.

This session was a bit emotional – and I am thankful for the openness and the trust of my model. This kind of atmosphere does not exist very often and it requires a lot of trust on both sides to let go.
Die Bilder sind nicht perfekt, so wie wir alle nicht perfekt sind.
Wir leben unsere Leben als ein ständiges Improvisationstheater, immer auf der Suche nach der Perfektion. Und merken oft nicht, dass wir wie die Esel sind, denen man die Möhre vor die Nase hält.
Um so angenehmer, ja wirklich befreiender, ist es, wenn wir lernen loszulassen. Dinge annehmen, ohne sie ändern oder perfektionieren zu wollen. Das Perfekte im Unperfekten finden (die Japaner sagen wabi sabi )
Ich selber mag diese scheinbare Perfektion, die einem die digitale Fotografie bietet, nur begrenzt. Besonders diese schier unendlich anmutenden Details sind oft schwierig. Wo analog sich vieles in dezenter Unschärfe verliert oder mit einem sanften Korn bedeckt ist, liegt hier digital-sauber alles offen und fordert einen im Nachgang.
Und dann tut man oft zu viel des Guten. Verläuft sich auf der Suche nach Perfektion.
Was versuche ich dagegen zu tun?
Persönlich hilft: reden und zuhören. Oft wird auch von dem Models signalisiert, dass sie gern auch auf den Bilder erkennbar sind – besonders Susanna, die hier zu sehen ist.
Daneben kann man technisch seine Kamera ein wenig bändigen. Blende auf und ISOs hoch. Knappe Schärfe und reduzierte Abbildungsleistung treffen dann auf ein dezentes Rauschen und verminderte Auflösung.
Und in PS sich auf das nötigste beschränken – oder, wie hier geschehen, in Lightroom wirklich nur die Basics bearbeiten.
Und dazu stehen, dass Haut auch mal unrein ist, und der Fokus nicht perfekt sitzt.
Denn den Ausdruck und den Moment, den kann uns Photoshop nicht wiederbringen.

This shooting went from bad to perfect to lucky.
When Lisa and I started to plan this shoot, I instantly had the idea of showing her bodysuit against a cloudy sky. However, when the day of the shooting arrived the sky was all white/grey, which made some very soft light, but didnt look as I planned. So, we decided to shoot another outfit first and hope for the best and when the weather finally changed, I was super happy.
In fact, I was so happy, that I forgot about the second lens I was carrying around in my bag, which landed in the nearby water.
Frustrated about this accident I fished it out, dried it right at the location and again when I arrived back home. Luckily I had both lens caps and a filter on the lens, which ultimately saved it from taking any serious damage. As Im writing this blog entry almost 3 weeks have gone by and after checking it several times, it still works as fine as before. So I might’ve been super lucky with the lens and the weather. A shooting day, which I will remember for a long time.

These photos are from 3 seperate photo shoots with Crash using my Lomography Instant Wide camera. I love to create one of a kind double exposures using this camera. The images come out and it’s like magic. Making photos in this way is my favorite thing to do with a camera.
