A TRANSFORMATION ON THE SPECTRUM OF GENDER

We live in a gender binary system, where you can't buy a single piece of clothing without first entering one of the two sections: "woman" or "man". Even when buying a white shirt or sneakers, an online shop will usually first force you to pick a gender.

Why don't we see the spectrum of gender more like different colors? Just like colors, the meaning of clothing changes over time and between cultures. Pink was considered a male color, roman warriors wore skirts to battle and in scotland kilts are still a thing.

But, in your present, in the culture you are living in, all those things feel like unchangable conventions which must not be changed.

Maybe clothing needs meaning, maybe without it something would be missing. Am I interested in wearing a dress EVEN THOUGH it is considered female or am attracted to it BECAUSE it is considered female?

Do we give the meaning to the clothes or do the clothes define who we are?

Both is true.

Schwarzweiß ist auch eine Farbe. Ausdrucksvoll ist sie, darstellend. So auch Runa, als sie sich im Fotostudio vorstellt.

In grobem Schwarzweiß liegt der Körper wie in die Landschaft hineingeschrieben – kein Fremdkörper, sondern Teil des Bodens, verwurzelt, beinahe verschmolzen. Zusammengekauert, schützend und doch offen, erinnert die Pose an eine Rückkehr, eine Umarmung des Ursprungs.

Die Haut, von Schlamm gezeichnet, trägt Muster wie lebendige Malerei. Linien und Spuren umschmeicheln den Leib, lassen ihn zugleich roh und zerbrechlich erscheinen. Zwischen den Fingern haftet die Erde, als wollte sie festhalten, als sei Halt und Last dasselbe.

Das Gesicht, halb entrückt, halb wach, bricht durch die Dunkelheit: Augen, die leuchten, als wüssten sie um den Kontrast zwischen innerem Frieden und der Wildheit des Bodens.

Hier sprechen Körper und Erde eine gemeinsame Sprache. Sie erzählen von Verletzlichkeit, vom Sich-Einlassen, vom Aufgehen in etwas Größerem. Es ist keine Pose, sondern ein Zustand – die Stille des Eingebundenseins.

Whilst the sun is scorching around Europe at the moment there are times of year we grab every ray of sunshine we can.

This set is from an abandoned water dam frozen in late winter, the warm sun had started to thaw the ice and snow, as life started to return.

WINTER SUN

How valuable it is in these short days,

threading through empty maple branches,

the lacy-needled sugar pines.

Its glint off sheets of ice tells the story

of Death’s brightness, her bitter cold.

We can make do with so little, just the hint

of warmth, the slanted light.

The way we stand there, soaking in it,

mittened fingers reaching.

And how carefully we gather what we can

to offer later, in darkness, one body to another.
